After four successful forays on The Embarcadero and in the Mission district, Sunday Streets, which shuts downs automobile traffic for bikers, joggers, walkers and others, will move to Golden Gate Park and the Outer Sunset district.

John F. Kennedy Drive in Golden Gate Park and Great Highway near Ocean Beach will host activities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Great Highway will be shut down from Golden Gate Park to the San Francisco Zoo. A small portion of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive also will be closed.

Many residents and merchants in the Outer Sunset think the event is an ideal showcase for the oft-overlooked neighborhood, said Buffy Maguire, who owns two Java Beach Cafes on Great Highway.

"We're really looking forward to seeing some newcomers in the community," she said. "It's great that this event gives pedestrians and bicyclists a chance to come out here, because that's the best way to explore this neighborhood. There are some great little gems that people in cars miss sometimes."

Supervisor Carmen Chu, whose district covers much of Sunday's route, echoed Maguire's sentiment, saying the event offers a chance to showcase the neighborhood, which is easily accessible by two Muni Metro lines.

There is a second Sunday Streets event scheduled for the same route Sept. 6, so this weekend's program will give organizers a chance to address any neighborhood concerns, Chu said.

"We understand that the Sunday Streets has been successful in the past, but this weekend will be a good way to see if there is anything that should be improved for the next event," she said.

Because of frequent sandstorms, it's not unusual for portions of Great Highway to be shut down, so negative feedback on the street closures has been fairly minimal, Chu said.

Weather is often unpredictable along the western edge of The City, but Sunday's participants should be greeted by typically normal summer conditions, said meteorologist Dan Gudgel of the National Weather Service.

A few low-lying clouds might cool things off a bit in the morning, but by afternoon the sun is expected to come out and temperatures should rise into the high 60s, he said.
