Shortly before noon, a metal canister was reported on northbound Highway 680 just north of state Highway 4, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A Contra Costa County Hazardous Materials team was called to investigate the brown liquid that was spilling from the canister, an agency dispatcher said.

The liquid was deemed to be harmless, and the highway was reopened at about 1:20 p.m. after the cylinder was removed, according to the CHP.
