The birds are the survivors of a foamy slime and had been flown to the International Bird Rescue Center in Fairfield to be cleaned.

Once a bird gets into the foam, it becomes vulnerable to hypothermia.

Thousands of birds died.

As for the killer foam? A federal wildlife lab is trying to determine the cause. It has since diminished as mysteriously as it had formed.
