Volunteer escorts to enhance BART safety

Volunteers will be escorting passengers to their cars at the West Oakland BART station starting Thursday evening, to try to improve safety.

Oakland and BART police will be working with trained volunteers who will be wearing red vests. They will walk or drive passengers to their cars within three blocks of the station.

Officials say the area around the West Oakland station is not well lit and there have been problems at the parking lot.
