San Francisco took a major step forward in its effort to become a global hub for clean technology.

Mayor Gavin Newsom welcomed Spanish renewable energy company GA Solar to the city Tuesday.

The mayor says the company is a leader in the solar energy sector, as a developer of renewable energy projects in Spain, Italy, India and the United States.

"GA Solar thinks San Francisco is in the foreground of any solar and renewable initiative in the U.S., and very much all around the globe," GA Solar spokesperson Pablo Otin said.

GA Solar currently employs seven people in San Francisco but plans to expand its local operations once it is headquartered in the city.

GA Solar just landed a billion dollar solar project in New Mexico.
