Boat in Half Moon Bay emptied of fuel, sand

A fishing boat called the "Phyllis J" remains grounded along a beach near Half Moon Bay, but the U.S. Coast Guard says most of the fuel on board the vessel has been safely removed.

Crews hoped to remove it sometime on Wednesday, but discovered it was too heavy to tow because of sand that ended up on board the boat as it rolled around close to shore.

Workers waited until low tide Wednesday afternoon to remove the sand.

The Phyllis J. ran aground early Tuesday morning after all three of its crew members fell asleep at sea.
