The Coast Guard honored a pair of genuine heroes in Alameda Friday. Petty Officer Erick Conatser and former Petty Officer Ramu Linsky were given the Silver Life Saving Medal Friday morning.

They were on liberty in August 2009 when they heard 14-year-old Chris Williams cry for help, as he was being swept down the American River. They swam 300 yards to reach the boy, pulled him to safety and administered CPR until he started breathing again.

The Silver Life Saving Medal is one of the oldest honors presented by the U.S. military. Only a handful are given each year.
