1 dead, 1 injured in I-880 overturned vehicle accident

OAKLAND, Calif.

Initial reports at 8 p.m. indicated that a vehicle had flipped over on its side with occupants trapped inside near the MacArthur Maze, where northbound I-880 meets westbound I-80, CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said.

Additional reports indicated that a second vehicle, a silver Kia Spectra, had been involved in the crash and that at least one person was trapped beneath the pickup truck, a burgundy 1995 Chevrolet S-10, Van Eckhardt said.

When the first CHP unit arrived at the scene, officers found an unresponsive victim trapped inside the Chevy and closed the connector ramp, Van Eckhardt said, prompting a Sig-alert at 8:09 p.m.

One of the truck's occupants was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was transported to a hospital, he said. The extent of that victim's injuries was unknown.

Three lanes of the connector ramp had remained closed for more than two hours, he said. The traffic advisory was cancelled at 10:25 p.m.

The driver of the Kia stopped a short distance from the scene and was later arrested, Van Eckhardt said.

As of 10:30 p.m., the coroner's office did not have information about the deceased victim's identity.
