A new program is underway in West Oakland, aimed at teaching parents and guardians how to cook healthy foods. The kids who attend West Oakland Middle School and their families will benefit from the eight week program.

AmeriCorps volunteer Leslie Pace was working at West Oakland Middle School when she realized there was a disconnect between what she was trying to teach kids about nutrition and what they were being taught at home. So she decided to start a cooking class for parents.

With childhood obesity at an all-time high they are also focusing on how to get kids more interested in healthy eating. Some tactics they will discuss include getting kids involved in grocery shopping and cooking.
