Sales of the Lap-Band have been declining, so its maker Allergan has asked the government to approve Lap-Band surgeries for obese children as young as 14. The band is a silicon ring that fits around the stomach and reduces food intake. Its makers say it's proven safe for adults and is now beginning clinical trials on teens.
However, many doctors say there's not enough data yet on the Lap-Band's safety and effectiveness. Critics point out that many patients need additional surgeries to replace or remove the device.
