Granny scam strikes again

BURLINGAME, Calif.

Burlingame police say an elderly woman lost $1,200 when she wired it to Canada because she thought it was going to help her grandson.

What happened was this: a scammer called, said he was a friend of her grandson, and said the grandson had been involved in a car accident in Canada and needed the money for an attorney.

She didn't realize she'd been conned until she told her family what happened; by then her money was gone.

Police say families need to talk about this with their elders and maybe set-up a code relatives can use if there's really an emergency.
