Since the walk began in 1987, the fundraiser has brought in more than $74 million which has been used for HIV prevention, awareness, needle exchange programs, testing and care services.
Organizers hope to beat last year's total of $3 million, which was raise in large part by the 25,000 people who took part in the 10 kilometer walk."This is a very retail, street level, walking king of an event," said Neil Giuliano with the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. "It's our walkers who will be out there asking their friends and family and business partners, and my neighbors for support to participate in the AIDS walk."
The 2011 AIDS walk will take place on July 17th at Golden Gate Park.
