People, Places and Things: Gertie's Barbecue Sauce

TOLEDO, OH This is Gertie's barbecue sauce. Gertie's son Kyle Baker invented it. "Everybody likes barbecue sauce. There isn't too many people that don't like a good barbecue sauce Rebecca," says Kyle Baker.

Baker was a salesman by day, but was the go-to guy among his friends and family when it came to great grilling. "People started saying, 'Could you make me some of that sauce? Let's go to Kyle's, he's got that good sauce.' Yes."

So he turned that idea into a line of Gertie's Premium Barbecue Sauces produced in northwest Ohio. "What makes Gertie's really unique other than the outstanding taste is that it's an all season's barbecue sauce. Gertie's as a pizza sauce as a meat loaf glaze, it's used as a sandwich spread they even they even mix it with cole slaw."

So what can you do to make sure you've got the best cookout? "Do you want one of my grilling secrets?" asks Baker. "Take an onion and slice it. You can put it in wedges or rings." That's right, put the onion right on the heating element.

Don't be stingy with the sauce. Baker says, "You can never put two much sauce on them either. I'll tell you that."

l And be careful not to overcook. "It only takes 15 seconds to caramelize. Hurry up and caramelize." Then it's time to try Kyle "The Grillmaster" Baker's ribs and wings.

Kyle says his mother may be gone, but she's still inspiring him with this heavenly barbecue sauce business. "It wasn't for her I wouldn't have gone any further than just making it for friends and family."
