Oakland city officials facing budget deadline

OAKLAND, Calif.

The council met Tuesday night after announcing earlier that the Police Officers Association, firefighters union, and three other employee groups had agreed to concessions. They include asking their members to pay nine percent of their pension costs.

Council members also considered a proposal to rehire 44 laid off police officers, but it was not clear if the money to do that would come from sale of the Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center, which was also discussed.
