Utility crews say the type of two-inch pipe that burst at a condominium in Cupertino that sparked a fire has a tendency to crack and leak, so the utility company is gearing up to replace 1,200 miles of those pipes across the state.
The project is expected to take three years. PG&E will ask for a rate increase to cover the costs.
