The fire alarms were checked a week and half before a fire broke out at a San Francisco apartment Saturday, according to an official with the Housing Authority.

Firefighters used ladders to rescue several people from the public housing building on Ellis Street where many of the residents are elderly or disabled.

On Monday, the San Francisco Housing Authority said the alarms were working, but some did not go off because the fire didn't produce that much smoke.
