2 arrested for stealing from luggage at LAX

LOS ANGELES

Trammel Nelson, 37, and Shaun Green, 23, were arrested after several search warrants were served as part of an ongoing investigation regarding reports of thefts at the airport.

According to the Los Angeles Times, one man is a baggage handler, and the other is a former baggage handler for Delta Airlines.

"You're supposed to be able to trust these people, so pretty devastating," said Kelly Richburg.

Both men are accused of stealing more than $100,000 in cash and property from passengers, according to the Times.

Passenger Jeff Isacs carries tools in his luggage for work, and he said he has had things stolen right out of his bags.

Baggage thefts at the airport are not uncommon. Last year, a Transportation Security Administration screener was arrested for stealing more than $30,000 worth of property and cash from luggage.

Here are some tips for travelers to protect their bags:

  • Make your luggage noticeable by choosing bright colors or decorate your bags with colorful straps.
  • Use inexpensive luggage.
  • Use hard-sided luggage because they are more difficult to open.
  • Keep your valuables in carry-on bags.
