A former Stanford University president has died. Richard Lyman died Sunday of congestive heart failure in Palo Alto.

Lyman held the president post from 1970-1980. He was perhaps best known for having clamped down on student protests during the Vietnam War, urging riot police to come on campus after students vandalized buildings.

He was 88 years old.
