Zakiyyah Williams, 24, who was arraigned in Alameda County Superior Court on Thursday and was released on Friday after making another brief court appearance, is scheduled to return to court next Friday to possibly enter a plea.
Williams is charged with child abuse and corporal injury to a child for injuries suffered by the boy, who is being treated at Children's Hospital Oakland.
Williams and the boy's mother and stepfather were arrested on Monday after Williams called police to report that he was unresponsive, according to Oakland police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson.
However, the Alameda County District Attorney's Office on Thursday only filed charges against Williams and the mother and stepfather were released from custody. A spokeswoman said there's insufficient evidence to file charges against the mother and stepfather at this time.
Doctors at Children's Hospital who examined the 3-year-old boy found that he was suffering from recent and older head trauma as well as a liver laceration from blunt trauma, according to a probable cause statement filed in court by Oakland police Officer Erich Cumby.
Doctors also found numerous scars and marks on the boy's torso and legs that were more than a week old, including a laceration to his ear, a cigarette burn scar, a lighter burn scar and a large burn scar, Cumby said.
Three other children associated with Williams' home who were reported missing earlier this week were found safe at a relative's home in Patterson on Wednesday. But a fourth child, 16-year-old Alyajah Marie Johnson, remains missing, Watson said.
