The Southern California city of El Monte is launching an independent review of an incident in which 14 lifeguards were fired for their parody of the popular music video "Gangnam Style."

The lifeguards' video spoof of South Korean singer PSY's song has over 1.5 million views on YouTube but city officials say it was improper use of city property because the lifeguards filmed it at the city pool in their uniforms.

After a packed city council meeting Tuesday night, El Monte's mayor says he will request an independent review of the incident.

One of the lifeguards says the group never thought it would get this far.

PSY's original video for "Gangnam Style" has more than 220 million views on YouTube.

A Facebook page supporting the lifeguards and their video is getting thousands of messages of support, some from as far away as Great Britain and Belgium.
