Oakland police investigate shooting that injured girl

OAKLAND, Calif.

Investigators believe the girl was struck in the leg by gunfire near 65th Avenue just before 3 p.m. Monday.

Police say she was not the intended target of two gunmen and that her injuries are not considered to be life threatening.

The shooting prompted a rare crime scene visit by Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan.

"Well I wanted to send a message that these types of senseless acts of violence has to be stopped," Jordan said. "It was important for me to get out here to first show support for the family and just pray that everything works out fine for that young lady."

Jordan says his officers are interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence.

No arrests have been made.
