A Peace Corps volunteer from Brentwood has died in China.

23-year-old Nicholas Castle died Thursday after a short illness.

Castle joined the Peace Corps after graduating from U.C. Berkeley. He was teaching university-level English when he got sick. He was scheduled to complete his service in July 2014.

In his Peace Corps application, the 23-year-old stated that serving in the Peace Corps was a lifelong dream because it was a chance to experience a different culture.

Castle's parents were with him when he died.
