Trial begins in murder of Virginia man killed in Oakland

The prosecutor asked the widow, Wendy Wang, some basic questions such as if he was here for a job interview and if she recalled what he had in his wallet. It was a brief and emotional testimony.

"I really miss my husband and my children really miss their father," Wang told reporters outside the Alameda County Courthouse.

Wang lost her husband nearly three years ago after he was shot during a robbery in downtown Oakland. The 45-year-old Kang had traveled from Virginia to the Bay Area for a job interview with Google. He was a network engineer.

He was in Oakland to get his teeth cleaned at the dental office of a friend who could only fit him in late in the evening. When they left the office on Webster Street, police say they were approached by two robbers.

In court Wednesday, the dental hygienist friend said because she was attacked from behind, it was difficult to see their faces. Police say surveillance video shows the two suspects just minutes before the murder.

The man in the black hooded sweatshirt is George Huggins, the alleged shooter. Police say they found gunpowder residue on his sleeve. Next to him is Althea Housley. She has now confessed and has agreed to testify against Huggins. In exchange, she will only be charged with voluntary manslaughter.

Kang had $17 on him at the time of the robbery. His widow says being in the courtroom brought her a lot of pain.

"I'm a Christian," Wang said. "I do trust God and also, I trust the law system will bring justice."

Wang and her family have received a lot of support from the Asian community and others in Oakland.

"Today we are hoping that we can be seeking justice and bringing closure not only to the family but to the entire community," Oakland community member Carl Chan said.

During her testimony, the dental hygienist friend said that at one point during the robbery she heard Kang praying and then she heard the gunshots.

Kang's widow returns to Virginia Wednesday night.
