A Northern California family is fighting to keep a pet deer that the state Department of Fish and Wildlife says it must confiscate.

The Cervantes family took in the deer, named Florecita, two years ago when she was a newborn after finding the doe huddled next to its dead mother. It now lives on the family's ranch north of Sacramento.

The state says the family can apply for a permit, but typically it is granted for educational purposes or for animal rehabilitation.
