On Sunday the owner of Lefty O'Doul's handed over a check to the players. The money will cover the equipment and merchandise stolen from a storage locker early Saturday morning. Because of the theft, the league had worried they'd have to cancel half of this season's games.
"They were going to stop the games," restaurant owner Nick Bovis said. "And when we heard that, then no way, we're not going to let that happen. All we have to do is make sure the kids got the equipment. And that's all we can do. And the rest is up to them."
The thieves stole umpire equipment, bats, and even food the league sold at its concession stand.
The $1,500 check from the Lefty O'Doul's Foundation will cover all of the stolen merchandise.
