Between 400 and 500 people lined up at Sacred Heart Community Services in San Jose.
Sacred Heart hopes to eventually fill at least 2,300 backpacks with supplies like pencils, pens, crayons, notebooks, and calculators.
But right now, Sacred Heart only has 100 backpacks. Organizers are asking for donations of cash and supplies.
