The pipe broke just before 1 a.m. Saturday on Foothill Boulevard and 166th Avenue.
Water officials say the six inch main broke, sending water flowing down Foothill.
It took crews about an hour to shut off the leak.
The East Bay Municipal Utility District says the repair will be extensive and could take until Sunday to complete.
No word yet on why the pipe broke.
