Facebook, Cisco team up to expand free Wi-Fi

When customers pick up the Wi-Fi network they don't have to enter a password. Instead, they're directed to a Facebook page where they're strongly encouraged to check-in for free Internet.

Once they're connected, users are brought to the business' Facebook Page that contains information about the venue or possible discounts and specials.

Facebook, meanwhile, can take large chunks of anonymous data from the check-ins and help businesses analyze the demographics of their customers.

TechCrunch reports this Cisco and Facebook partnership extends a pilot of "Facebook Wi-Fi" that began running last year with 25 businesses in the Bay Area. The test showed that by using the system, businesses tripled their daily check-in count.
