Vallejo school locked down after shots fired near campus

Shortly before 11 a.m., a Cal Fire crew doing some work in an open field adjacent to Joseph Wardlaw Elementary School saw people shooting at an unknown target from an elevated spot nearby, Lt. Kenny Park said.

The Cal Fire workers were not hit by the gunfire, and the crew reported the incident to police. One suspect was described as a man wearing a brown sweater and another was said to be wearing a white shirt, according to police.

Officers responded and advised the school, located at 1698 Oakwood Ave., to go on lockdown as a precaution while they searched for the shooters, police said.

The officers saw two teenagers running through the field and detained them briefly, but determined that they were not involved in the shooting and let them go, Park said.

The Solano County Sheriff's Office and a California Highway Patrol helicopter crew assisted in the search.

The suspects were not located, and the lockdown was lifted shortly after noon when the search ended, police said.

No injuries were reported.
