Recreational Dungeness crab season opens in California

SAN FRANCISCO

"Crab populations appear to be strong coming off another record-setting year in the commercial fishery," said Pete Kalvass, a senior environmental scientist with the state department of fish and wildlife.

Sports crabbers can keep up to 10 Dungeness crabs per day of either sex I they reach the minimum size limit, or six if fishing from a party boat south of Mendocino County, officials said. No crabs can be taken from San Francisco Bay or San Pablo bay, which are crab nursery areas.

The commercial crabbing season is scheduled to start Nov. 15.
