New federal meat label rule goes into effect

You should start noticing something different on the next package of meat you purchase.

A new federal rule went into effect Saturday, requiring labels that tell you the country where the animal was born, raised, and slaughtered.

The rule applies to most meats as well as certain nuts and other food products.

Consumer advocates see the regulation as a way to strengthen food safety and boost transparency.

A number of companies in the meat industry oppose it, saying it's wasteful and costly.
