Bay Area fireworks sales underway
Sales of fireworks began Saturday and Bay Area fire departments are concerned about the week ahead.

SAN BRUNO, Calif. (KGO) -- Sales of fireworks began Saturday and Bay Area fire departments are concerned about the week ahead.

Samantha Lombardi's dad Jason says fireworks are a big family tradition, but he knows it's dry and dangerous out there. He's got a plan.

"Over the lawn; we wet the lawn, put wood down, stand there with a hose make sure we're safe,' he said.

San Bruno Fire Chief Mark Ladas likes hearing that, but knows not everyone is that careful.

"Any time it's left up to the individual it's always a concern we can't watch everybody," he said.

Extra fire patrols will be out on the holiday looking for violators. Private property is the only place you can light fireworks. A letter from the city spells that out to every buyer.

Linda Lozano is worried about fire. She's attending her family reunion in Union City, where fireworks don't go on sale until July 1. Signs are already everywhere warning against using illegal fireworks, but Lozano says it happens every holiday.

"Once it's nighttime, things really get crazy; bottle rockets, very loud," she said.

Everyone wants to celebrate on the 4th, but signs of our severe drought are everywhere

"My concerns are the hills very dry not green," Union City resident Rhonda Alcazar said.
