CHP monitors troublesome roadways before storm

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The rain has created a slick sheen on the highway and there are many trouble spots the CHP is worried about during the big storm.

Interstate 280 and Cesar Chavez Street is prone to flooding and major problems.

PG&E crews are already gearing up for what's to come. It's all hands on deck. Workers from as far away as Bakersfield are already on alert and coming to the Bay Area to help this week.

"We keep an eye on the storm once we know the area," said PG&E spokesperson Andrew Minetti. "That we see that could be impacted heavily by the storm, we stage our crews in those areas and respond as quickly as we can."

The CHP is preparing along with Caltrans. The hot spots they are worried about are prone to flooding are at the Interstate 280 South extension near 18th and Cesar Chavez Street, 10 Central Freeway North and Southbound near South Van Ness Avenue, Eastbound Interstate 80 near 7th Street and Highway 101 near Paul Avenue.

Just about any officer available will be asked to hit the roads.

"They'll come out and work as well to keep traffic moving," said CHP officer Vu Williams. "And also keep speeds down and clear crashes."

By the time the bulk of the storm hits, the king tides currently pounding the bay should subside.

They left damage in Marin County and impacted the beach nourishment project at Ocean Beach.

"They were actively putting sand on the beach and you could see it being washed away simultaneously," said Ian Wren, of San Francisco Baykeeper.
