The Consumer Product Safety Commission has named four winners of a challenge to create the best product safety app.

The agency presented the awards Tuesday to the winning developers. Their apps each have ways to alert you about recalls.

Among them, the apps will send emails about dangerous products, let you scan a barcode to see if that item was recalled, and compare your email receipts against a recall list.

"These apps can only help further our efforts to get consumers to not only be aware of, but to respond to, product safety incidents," said CPSC Director Elliot Kaye.

Each developer won a prize of $1,000. Their apps can be downloaded for free.
