FREMONT, Calif. (KGO) -- Fremont police have confirmed a man has died after two officers shot at him. Police say the man was armed and left a traffic stop. The officer-involved shooting took place at Fremont Boulevard between Paseo Padre Park and Thornton Decoto.

Neighbors say they heard the activity first hand. "We heard two pop shots, bam bam and that was it," said Luis Hernandez, who lives nearby.

The clerk at a nearby 7-Eleven says the confrontation started after a young man bought cigarettes, cigars and beer, then walked out to his car where two others were waiting.

An East Bay Regional Parks Officer came upon the car and called for backup after seeing what he thought was a firearm.

The clerk says his customer ran across the street and through the shopping center.

Fremont police followed the suspect along with the SWAT team.

Luis Hernandez says officers asked the suspect to surrender for 15 minutes. "They were trying to reach the subject but the subject did not come out."

Two officers eventually fired at the suspect, he died at the scene.

The cause of the shooting remains under investigation.
