MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (KGO) -- Google has announced a prototype of its new self-driving car could hit the road in the New Year.

Until now, Google's been testing its driverless technology with equipment and sensors wired in to already-existing vehicles.

On Monday, the company announced it has now built a car of its own. It looks like a tiny two-seater that resembles a Volkswagen Beetle.

Google is now looking for a car manufacturer to build and sell them within five years.
