Interim SF Police Chief Toney Chaplin among finalists for permanent position

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- There are new reports Tuesday morning that acting San Francisco Police Department Chief Toney Chaplin is among the finalists for the permanent job.

The San Francisco Examiner reports there are 11 people in the running and that's narrowed down from a list of 60 applicants.

Five of the 11 finalists are from within the department.

The San Francisco Police Commission is expected to forward the names of three finalists to San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee in the next month.

ABC7 News learned earlier this month that Chaplin graduated on June 26, 2016, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Leadership from Colorado State University-Global Campus. "We are proud of his accomplishments as a student of CSU-Global," the school said.

Chaplin had been criticized for refusing to reveal information about his educational background, including what the degree was in or which school he graduated from.

Chaplin has made it known that he wants to become the permanent chief. While San Francisco requires its department heads to have a bachelor's degree, that is not a requirement for police chief.
