Bay Area homeowners can apply for chance at $3,000 earthquake grants

DALY CITY, Calif. -- California has expanded its Brace and Bolt program to help retrofit homes in zip codes which face the highest risk of earthquake damage.

Homeowners in Daly City, Colma, San Bruno, San Mateo, Redwood City, El Cerrito and Hayward may be eligible for a chance at up to $3,000 in seismic upgrades.

Eligibility depends on local geological hazards combined with your home construction type's vulnerability.

Homeowners in San Francisco, Oakland and San Leandro have benefited from the program since its inception in 2015.

"It was really significant to us," said Virginia Bryant of San Leandro. "We knew it was something we wanted to do and being able to do it basically for free was really valuable."

Program registration lasts through Feb. 27.
