Consumer Reports reveals types of food not to feed your dog
Consumer Reports and 7 On Your Side's Michael Finney teamed up for a report on a list of food that can make your dog sick.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Consumer Reports and 7 On Your Side's Michael Finney teamed up for a report on type of food that can make your dog sick.

Theo, the Glatzer family dog, was alone with the their toddler and a bowl of grapes. Later they noticed the grapes were missing.

Knowing that grapes can be toxic for dogs, they immediately rushed Theo to the animal hospital.

"As most dog owners know, they'll really eat anything and there are some human food that will cause some serious health problems," said Julia Calderon, with Consumer Reports.

The FDA recently released information on people food that can make dogs sick. Here are a few you might not know about: Onions, garlic, chives and any foods seasoned with them can damage a dog's red blood cells, which can progress to anemia.

Macadamia nuts are also toxic for dogs and can lead to vomiting, fever, and muscle weakness.

Fatty foods, like fried chicken, can inflame a dog's pancreas.

And xylitol, a low-calorie sweetener used in many processed foods like gum, can cause a rapid spike in a dog's insulin levels.
