On Monday, the city introduced its third boat at McCovey Cove for the official commissioning ceremony for the Saint Francis.

The boat cost nearly $12 million. Most of the money came from a port security grant.

Fire officials showed off its impressive firefighting cannons and apparatus.

The Loma Prieta earthquake was on Senator Dianne Feinstein's mind. She recalled how a fireboat fed a portable hydrant to help stop the marina fire in 19-89.

"I was told all the water mains were out," she said. "So that hydrant went up Divisadero Street, and actually to a great extent saved the day."

The Saint Francis joins the Phoenix and the Guardian in the department's fleet.

The son of a San Francisco firefighter won a contest to name it.
