SUNNYVALE, Calif. (KGO) -- A man who was shot and killed by a Sunnyvale public safety officer on Saturday has been identified as 23-year-old Allen Matthew Baker III out of San Diego. Another suspect is in custody and a third who got away has an outstanding arrest warrant in connection with a homicide.
An 18-year veteran with Sunnyvale's Department of Public Safety is on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting.
"I think officers were faced with a deadly force situation and responded to it," said Sunnyvale DPS Captain Jeffrey Hunter.
Around 4:15 p.m. someone reported suspicious activity at a Motel 6, including two women going back and forth between a Jaguar and a motel room. When officers approached the vehicle they say two of the three men inside took off running.
According to Hunter, one dropped a high capacity magazine and then pointed a gun at the officer.
"The officer fired nine rounds at the suspect," he said. "The officer and the suspect were facing each other at the time of the shooting and in very close proximity to one another."
Officers identified the suspect shot and killed as Baker, who they say had a no bail arrest warrant for robbery out of San Diego County.
Motel 6 guest Andrea Lara says she was startled.
"I just heard some gunshots and I looked out and then I saw a lot of police out there," she said.
Hunter says it's unclear whether or not Baker fired any rounds. Investigators say they found another loaded gun in his backpack.
Sunnyvale DPS says they believe the second suspect who took off running is Shawn Lamont Brown, who has an outstanding warrant from Fresno County for his arrest in connection with a July homicide.
After a six hour multi-agency search, officers said they believe Brown is no longer in Sunnyvale.
A third suspect, Raymond Deshawn Hackett Jr., complied with officers. He was arrested on a domestic violence warrant out of San Diego County.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety at (408) 730-7110.
