Caltrans: I-280 seismic upgrade work is right on schedule

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Caltrans says work on Interstate 280 is right on schedule.

All northbound lanes of 280 from the 101 split to the King Street off-ramp are closed for the holiday weekend.

Crews are replacing two bridge hinges near Cesar Chavez Street as part of a seismic retrofitting project on 280.

"This hinge has done its job," said Caltrans spokesperson Walter Wallace. "It's been around for 50 years or so with San Francisco traffic and it's just time for a repair. This hinge replacement has nothing to do with the recent quake; it was scheduled years out, in advance."

If you're going to Sunday afternoon's Giant's game at AT&T Park, give yourself extra time. Traffic coming from the south was significantly backed up ahead of Saturday night's game.

I-280 is scheduled to reopen Tuesday at 5 a.m.

The planned closure is the third this year. The highway was also closed in the area for similar seismic strengthening during the Memorial Day and Fourth of July holiday weekends.

Over the Labor Day weekend, motorists can call 511 or visit 511.org for more information about the closure and any changes in the reopening time.

Motorists are advised to use public transportation such as BART, Caltrain, San Francisco Municipal Railway and SamTrans to avoid heavy traffic in the area caused by the detour.
