San Rafael police have announced a new, free iPhone application will enable citizens to access local crime mapping and national sex offender data.

The new iPhone application in partnership with CrimeReports is now available at the iTunes App Store, police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher said.

The San Rafael Police Department already publishes crime data on the National Crime Map at www.crimereports.com, Rohrbacher said.

The CrimeReports iPhone app also contains crime data for more than 600 other law enforcement agencies in North America and includes registered sex offender data for all 50 states, Rohrbacher said.

"This information is vital to our citizens safety," said Chief Matthew Odetto.

"Providing it to the general public through a mobile device allows citizens even easier access to it than before. We're pleased to be offering the most advanced tools available to foster communication and engagement with community members to prevent and reduce crime," Odetto said.
