Three teens charged in Southpoint murder

DURHAM, N.C.

Officers were dispatched to a shooting call in the 6800 block of Fayetteville Road shortly before 1 p.m. When they arrived, they found 24-year-old Brian Christopher Keys, of Greensboro, lying in the parking lot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers were given a description of a suspect vehicle and got behind a similiar Jeep Liberty matching that description a short time later on Fayetteville Road. The driver refused to stop and officers chased the vehicle until it crashed near Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway into two other vehicles, causing one of the vehicles to overturn.

Three suspects fled on foot, but were soon caught by police.

Investigators have charged the three occupants of the vehicle -- 19-year-old Monquell Davis, 18-year-old Deshario Mitchell, 18-year-old Kadeem Johnson, all of Durham -- with murder. All are being held without bond.

In addition, Davis is charged with felony hit and run and fleeing/eluding arrest with a motor vehicle.

According to a preliminary investigation, it appears that Keys was shot inside the Jeep. The victim and suspects were acquaintances and it does not appear to have been a random act, according to investigators.

Molotov Mitchell was teaching a martial arts class in the plaza when the shooting took place.

"Someone came in and said hey someone was shot in the parking lot," Mitchell said. "We grabbed our first aid kits. We're CPR trained so we came out.  The gentleman was laid out. He was pretty much gone."

Everyone involved in the accident were treated on the scene for non-life threatening injuries.
