Christopher Beardon, 30, of Pittsburg and Terrence Marks, 28, of Richmond were traveling north on Highway 880 in the slow lane near the Jackson Street exit when someone in a dark-colored SUV fired several shots into their car at 10:36 p.m. Thursday, California Highway Patrol spokesman Sam Morgan said.
Morgan said the victims' Porsche swerved and slammed into a guardrail and then veered across lanes of traffic. The man in the passenger seat, identified as Marks, was ejected or fell out of the car and was hit by another vehicle, possibly a box-style truck, he said.
The driver of that vehicle did not stop but may not have known that the vehicle struck the man, Morgan said.
Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
Both victims were shot and it is believed that both were killed by the gunfire, but an autopsy will determine if the subsequent injuries suffered by Marks contributed to his death, Morgan said.
He said authorities would like to talk to the driver of the vehicle that struck the passenger.
Both victims were wearing yellow T-shirts similar to those worn by thousands of Warriors fans at the team's NBA playoff game against the San Antonio Spurs Thursday night and Warriors tickets were also found at the scene of the shooting, Morgan said.
The Warriors lost to the Spurs in Thursday's game and were eliminated from the playoffs.
Morgan said police don't have a description of the shooting suspects as of late this morning.
The shooting shut down all lanes of northbound Highway 880 and the Jackson Street on-ramp until shortly after 2:30 a.m. Friday.
