Top grad receives a university medal

BERKELEY, CA

22-year old graduating senior Leslie Sheu has been awarded the school's university medal. She'll receive a 2,500 scholarship and speak to thousands of her peers at /*UC Berkeley*/'s commencement next Tuesday.

Sheu is being recognized for her research into /*drug-resistant*/ strains of /*tuberculosis*/.

"Learning more about the particular mechanisms, how it is infecting people, and hopefully by understanding it better, we can combat it better," said Leslie Sheu, the UC Berkeley University medalist.

Sheu is also being honored for her outreach to Asians and Pacific Islanders suffering Hepatitis B, as well as her mentoring and fundraising work with orphans from China.

She's graduating in molecular and cell biology with a 3.99 grade point average. Next fall she'll begin medical school at UCSF.
