A 4-year-old boy shot in the chest by a pellet gun in Discovery Bay Sunday evening is recovering after being airlifted to a hospital for treatment, the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office reported today.

The boy and his father were in the front yard of their house in the 2300 block of Cambridge Drive around 7 p.m. when the father heard a popping noise, sheriff's Sgt. Dan Poplin said. The child then started to cry, and the father found the boy had a wound in his chest, Poplin said.

The father did not see where the shots came from, and deputies searched the area without finding a suspect.

The boy was airlifted to Children's Hospital & Research Center in Oakland and is "doing fine," Poplin said.

An investigation into the incident will likely not continue unless new leads are discovered, Poplin said.
