Safeway store robbed, suspect escapes

RODEO, CA

The man entered the store at 605 Parker Ave. around 9:40 p.m. as it was closing down for the night and acted as if he were purchasing an item, Sgt. Chris Vannoy said.

As the suspect handed the clerk money for the purchase, he brandished a gun and demanded cash, Vannoy said.

The clerk gave the suspect money and he walked out of the store. No other customers were in the store when the robbery occurred, Vannoy said.

Sheriff's officials quickly responded and searched the area with a helicopter and a dog, according to Vannoy. The suspect, believed to have fled on foot, was not found.

The suspect in the robbery is described as a black man in his 30s standing about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing about 190 pounds, Vannoy said.
