The program, called EcoDriving, will help drivers get 15 percent better gas mileage by driving more efficiently and maintaining their cars better.
If everyone in the state participated in the program, carbon emissions could be reduced by an equivalent to that produced by powering every home in Los Angeles, promoters said.
"It's no substitute for a consistent long-term energy," Schwarzenegger said. "But it does provide immediate relief from high gas prices."
