Emerald Bowl promotes green message

SAN FRANCISCO

A Florida-based company, FPL Energy LLC, announced this week it would supply the event with certified wind Renewable Energy Certificates to match the event's electricity consumption.

Emerald Bowl Executive Director Gary Cavalli said in a statement announcing the partnership that the effort would not only reduce the game's environmental impact but would also help "promote environmental awareness to a broad audience of sports enthusiasts."

The University of California at Berkeley Golden Bears (8-4) will face the University of Miami Hurricanes (7-5) in Saturday's game, which begins at 5 p.m.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and Miami Mayor Manny Diaz have made a friendly wager on the outcome, Newsom putting up a case of Napa Valley wine and San Francisco sourdough bread against several bags of Diaz's fresh Florida oranges.
